Painstakingly stripped and polished to produce a flawless true mirror finish this unit dates from the 1940's. The back panel is stamped 'ROF 3 1949' which seems to indicate this unit was manufactured in the Royal Ordnance Factories (ROFs), which was the collective name of the UK government's munitions factories in and after World War II. It's a very substantial item weighing in at 30kg and, in keeping with items from this era, the build quality is fantastic. This unit has clearly lived a life (see pic 12) and the surface areas feature various minor scuffs/blemishes etc. On the whole, however, the surfaces are in generally good condition.
I decided to mount the cabinet on a set of 6 inch hairpin legs with the aim being that it may double as a side table/storage unit. The extra height gained really does give the unit a very elegant look and feel. Each of the four drawers open/close relatively smoothly. As it's original brass handles were a little damaged and worse for wear I decided to add new replacements.
It should also be pointed out that I've modified the bottom left-hand drawer slightly as it was originally from a different unit. It was clearly from the same manufacturer but had slightly larger dimensions. This resulted in it not being able to close flush. Therefore I carefully trimmed a few millimetres from the bottom edge and smoothed it off. The end result being that, although the bottom edge now has an opening, it fits virtually flush into the slot. (See pic 10). The opening on the bottom edge would only be visible if the unit was upturned. (See pic 11)
The hard work and long hours of the refurbishment process have proven very worthwhile resulting in this fantastic looking piece which would compliment any setting. The refurb has been finished off with a final wax to provide added protection and durability.
Weight: 30kg approx
* Please note - the back panels on all my items have not been stripped/polished.
Before purchasing please bear in mind that the cabinets I refurbish/strip/polish are of a certain age dating from the 1930's to the 1970's approx. Therefore it's highly likely they will feature various signs of wear and tear gained over the years in the form of the odd minor scuff, blemish or dent etc. If there are any imperfections I consider to be substantial then I'll highlight them in the accompanying photos. I'll always do my very best to remove any unsightly marks etc but this isn't always possible. However, I do feel that the odd minor blemish only adds to the character of an item; it demonstrates that it has a history and a unique character. If you are looking for a cabinet with completely flawless/pristine surface areas then you would really need to invest in a modern/present day cabinet which is something I don't provide.
